Boy, I'm about to start an argument. I worked up an assignment for Serious Eats, which asked me to find the best pies in Arkansas. That's such a hard subject. I bypassed fried pies altogether and gave my 15 favorite pies in Arkansas. Believe me, I chewed my liver on this for some time.

I know, I know, I have certainly missed what you might consider the best pie in the state. Correct me. Tell me what fluffy meringue, what rich deep pecan, what tangy possum or thick custard pie I missed. I'm taking notes.

After all... today is Pi Day — 3.14.11.

  • Cats and dogs

I've always been leery of people who dislike animals. To my wife and me, a house without dog hair in the corners and a cat perched on the windowsill is as barren as a highway rest stop. We're down to three dogs and two cats, the smallest menagerie we've had for years.
