Pieday: Hershey Bar at E's Bistro

IMPOSSIBLY LIGHT: Hershey Bar Pie at Es Bistro
I have to confess — this was not the pie I went to check out. I was looking forward to this hazelnut lemon pie that I had heard was phenomenal. Sadly, when I went to have lunch at the North Little Rock lunch-and-take-home place, that pie was gone.

But there was Hershey Bar pie, worthy of a taste. And indeed, it’s a worthy pie.

Lunch was necessary before pie was acquired (you don’t think I just eat pies and burgers, do ya? Of course not). I really didn’t look over the menu all that much before my eye settled on the Pimento Cheese Sandwich. It’s served up with a choice of chips, pasta salad or fresh fruit, and I chose the latter. I also chose to have it on Honey Wheat instead of the alternative croissant.

Now, I’m a bit of a pimento cheese connoisseur. I adore it. This one was pleasantly different, with a blend of cheeses amidst the plentiful pimentos. It had enough good pimento flavor throughout and was a substantial scoop’s worth, enough for a decent lunch.

The fresh fruit consisted of strawberries, blueberries, cantaloupe and watermelon. And the tea was good.

And then there was the pie. The Hershey Bar Pie was delivered topped with syrup and pecans, with a mint sprig and a pile of strawberries on the side. All the accoutrements were unnecessary, though — since the pie itself was marvelous. The signature Hershey chocolate flavor was perfectly suspended in an impossibly light confection of just sweet enough cream to satisfy. I was expecting a heavy pie, but this was quietly light and tasty, with just the right amount of salt and sugar in it to hit the right buttons. This would be a good pie to have with a little iced coffee.

I have to get back for that hazelnut lemon pie, for sure. I think it might knock my socks off, especially if it shares some of the lightness in this particular chocolate cream pie. Yay.

You’ll find E’s Bistro on JFK in North Little Rock, in the shopping center in the curve (think where ½ of ½ and Dollar General are located). It’s open for lunch Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (same hours on Sunday for brunch). Since it’s also a take-home place, retail hours extend until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. (501) 771-6900 or check out the website.
