  • Kara Walker's "A Warm Summer Evening," one of the paintings Bacigalupi spoke about.

The Houston Culture Map posted a story today about Crystal Bridges Director Don Bacigalupi's talk on Tuesday at his alma mater, the University of Houston, quoting the director as saying he had bought "eight out of 10" of his most desired acquisitions for the museum. He may have been speaking in jest; at any rate, he didn't disclose what those paintings were. You might guess that they were acquisitions of contemporary art made since he came on board in 2009.

The headline for the story, "Museum or Drag Queen?", refers to a quip that Bacigalupi has made before, about having to reconcile with the name for the museum, which he said at first reminded him of a “a halfway house, a country singer or a drag queen.”
