"Formed From Fire: American Studio Glass from the Permanent Collection" opened today at the Arkansas Arts Center as part of a nationwide celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the American studio glass movement. (Google national celebration American studio glass movement and you'll see exhibits all over the country.) The movement was "born," the Corning Museum of Glass says, from two glass workshops given by Harvey K. Littleton at the Toledo Museum of Art.

The Arts Center exhibit features 30 glass objects (including pieces by Littleton) created in a variety of techniques — free-blown, mold-blown, cased, hot-worked, cut, cast, polished and layered. Other artists whose work appears in the exhibition include Dale Chihuly, Beth Lipman, Tim Tate, Sonja Blomdahl and others.

  • CALS checks out works from the Arkansas Arts Center

The Arkansas Arts Center will close in November 2019 for a massive renovation, now estimated at close to $100 million, but that doesn't mean it won't have a presence. In a clever collaboration with the Central Arkansas Library System, 3D objects from the permanent collection will be exhibited at CALS branches, its Main Library, and the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies.

A ban on turtle harvesting in the Gulf Coastal Plain and along the St. Francis River in Clay and Green counties voted on today by the state Game and Fish Commission won't make much of a dent in the total take of freshwater turtles in Arkansas — 0.2 percent come from the Gulf Coastal Plain for example —  but the commission did agree to study whether its trapping rules are having a negative consequence on native turtles.
