University of Arkansas to host "Moms on the Farm" event in Fayetteville

While the image of a stereotypical farmer might conjure up images of grizzled old men riding tractors and wrangling bulls, the reality of farm life is that it's a job that never ends and has no preference or respect for gender. With this in mind, the University of Arkansas' Dale Bumpers College of Agriculture, Food, and Life Sciences is hosting "Moms on the Farm," an event that hopes to get area women more involved in learning more about agricultural production, food safety, and nutrition. The event includes visits to a beef and dairy farm as well as cooking demonstrations by the Arkansas Cattlewomen.

I spoke with Dr. Janeal Yancey, event organizer and meat scientist at the University of Arkansas, and she described the event as a chance to "share agriculture with the women of Northwest Arkansas." She adds that "Typically, people feel more knowledgable about doing their taxes than about making healthy food decisions for their families." Of course, folks in Central Arkansas are more than welcome to take advantage of the free tour, although space is limited and reservations taken on a first-come, first-served basis. The tour will begin at the Pauline Whitaker Arena (1335 West Knapp), which is a couple of miles from the campus down Garland Avenue. I lived very near these facilities during my time at the University, and I still remember the impressive size and scope of what the Agriculture science department is doing.

For more information about the tour, contact Dr. Janeal Yance at (479) 575-4115, or e-mail her at jws09@uark.edu. The Moms on Farms tour also has a Facebook page where extra info can be found.
