50 50 50: Eddie Kendrick

Posted By on Mon, Sep 16, 2013 at 2:51 PM

Eddie Kendrick was a self-taught artist whose work came to light — literally — when someone opened the door to his janitor's office at a Little Rock elementary school and found his drawings, many on cardboard. His painting "These Or Angles That Watchs Over Us Day and Night Through Time, I Tell You When You Enter," which includes ballpoint pen and colored pencil, is hanging in the Arkansas Arts Center atrium in its "50 Works, 50 Weeks, 50 Years" anniversary exhibition, one work a week chosen by the staff.

The painting was a gift to the Arts Center from Kayren Grayson Baker, a teacher at Gibbs Magnet Elementary, where Kendrick (1928-1992) worked as an artist in residence after his work was discovered. Like all Kendrick's work, it has a religious theme.
