Here we are in early November. Around these parts, that means we're in the gearing-up stages of the annual Arkansas Times Musicians Showcase. We're lighting the tires and kicking the fires (that's right, we do things a bit differently around here). Dave Ramsey, he's over there listening to the entire Stax Records and Dischord discographies, simultaneously. Lindsey Millar's in his office doing pushups with his ears. I'm on a steady regimen of nothing but Polish black metal and Grateful Dead shows from '71-'72 and '74. I'm sure the good folks at Stickyz and Revolution are getting pumped up as well. They live and breathe this live music stuff 25-8.

It's a tough job, but it's all done in the name of being ready for another five weeks of excellent tunes, culminating in a final round that will see the crowning of the next Times Showcase winner.

All of that means: We wanna hear what you've got, bands of Arkansas. If you're based in The Natural State and you've got at least 20 minutes of original material, you are eligible. The showcase will start in late January and once a week for five weeks, four bands will square off for a panel of judges at Stickyz. The winner of each semi-final round will advance to the finals, which will be at Revolution.

Here's where to go to enter. If you've got any questions or concerns, email me (robert bell at ark times dot com).

You've got to figure that a band from frozen-ass Winnipeg is just gonna be way gnarlier and tougher than a band from some sun-kissed tropical clime where people wear tank tops and flip-flops year-round.

  • Cats and dogs

I've always been leery of people who dislike animals. To my wife and me, a house without dog hair in the corners and a cat perched on the windowsill is as barren as a highway rest stop. We're down to three dogs and two cats, the smallest menagerie we've had for years.
