Let's make a massive Spotify playlist of the best Arkansas music

I spent my teenager years and much of early adulthood obsessively collecting CDs and vinyl. Once everything went digital, I labored for years at digitizing everything. I finished just about the time Spotify and its ilk came around. That a sizeable chunk of popular music now lives in the cloud and is just a simple search away is of course life-changingly awesome. But the more time I spend on Spotify, the more I realize that I'm not very good at coming up with interesting things to listen to off the top of my head. So much of keeping up a diverse musical diet, for me at least, is about browsing. Unless you've made hundreds of playlists, Spotify doesn't really allow for browsing very well.

The best parts of Spotify are the social aspects. Seeing what your friends are listening to and getting to check out their playlists. In that spirit, I've started a collaborative playlist called Rock Candy's massive Arkansas mix. I'm borrowing the concept from local DJ Seth Baldy who does a similar monthly list (but with no limitations, geographical or otherwise). The idea is simple. Add five (or fewer) songs with Arkansas connections. They could be your favorite songs. They could be songs you've been listening to lately. It doesn't matter. The goal is simply to gather as much good Arkansas-related music into one playlist.

I've kicked it off, with an aim towards diversity, with Magic Cropdusters' "Kontiki," Johnny Cash's "Dinosaur Song" (worth hearing if only to hear JC rhyme "diplodocus" with "your school bus"), Arkansas Bo's "Cup Inside a Cup," Pharoah Sanders' "The Creator Has a Master Plan" and Class of 84's "The Past Is The Past."

Join in. Tell your friends.
