The Dogtown Grand Tour: Gadwall's Grill

The best thing about our next stop on the Grand Tour, Gadwall’s Grill, is that it knows exactly what it is: “of the neighborhood and for the neighborhood.” It’s the kind of place you can take the whole extended family, your baseball team, your college buddies or even a blind date and everyone will leave happy. It’s comfortable, it’s unpretentious, the menu is full of variety and the service is of the outstanding, “what can I get you, hon,” variety. Even better, unlike some similar places, here the food is reliably good and sometimes even great.

On a recent visit for breakfast, we really enjoyed the pancakes ($5.29), with available toppings that include fresh fruit, whipped cream and peanut butter cups ($.99 each), a side of grilled bologna ($1.99), a build-your-own omelet with cheese grits and a delicious grilled English muffin ($5.29), French toast sticks from the kiddie menu ($3.99) and something so wrong it’s totally right: Kalynn’s Hill ($8.29 with chicken, $6.29 without). Picture a split biscuit, topped with nicely-spiced fried chicken cutlets, topped with two eggs any style, topped with homemade gravy and finished with crumbled bacon. I guarantee you’ll need a nap afterward. Fortunately, the coffee is good and strong.

Standout items for lunch and dinner include the burgers (I especially like the patty melt on rye, $5.29), hamburger steak ($8.49), onion rings ($2.49), white chili ($3.89), the grilled turkey sandwich ($5.89) and the chicken nachos ($7.79). They also have pizza available, although we have not yet tried it.

Gadwall’s can be a bit hard to find the first time. It’s located up on a hill at the intersection of North Hills and JFK. From JFK, turn right just before Pop-a-Top liquor store and head up the hill. From North Hills, turn at the light and head up the hill. Breakfast hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 7 am-10:30 am, lunch and dinner hours are 11 am-9 pm, open until 10 pm on Friday and Saturday nights. They serve beer and wine and have happy hour specials on domestic draft from 3-6 pm.

I spent quite a few years in South Texas and I wondered if it could possibly compare to the taquerias I frequented there, but the constantly-packed parking lot soon convinced me to give it a shot.
