Jumbo waterslide event Slide the City coming to LR, Fayetteville

The problems with the old Slip'N Slide water toys were manifold. For one thing, the strip of banana-yellow vinyl the originals was made from was about as padded as your average shower curtain, meaning that anybody over the age of 10 who threw themselves down for a slide was liable to crack a rib. As if that wasn't terrifying enough, the versions of my childhood were anchored to the ground with a series of eyeball-poking wire stakes, and the lane was short and narrow enough that you were bound to eat mud at the end at least once in a day of fun.

What Arkansas kid DIDN'T wish for a limitless Slip n' Slide, one that wouldn't put the brakes on the fun at the exact moment you got going at a good clip? Not this one.

We're excited, therefore, at the news that Slide the City, a traveling water carnival that unfurls a 1,000-foot-long, padded, dual-lane, side-bumpered mega-version of the old Slip'N Slide down the middle of a city street, is coming to Little Rock and Fayetteville soon. So says their website, anyway. No word yet on a date, but pages for both cities are currently open for pre-registration, which allows a would-be slider to save five bucks off the regular admission. As seen below in a video from their event last summer in Salt Lake City, it looks like a hell of a good time.

There are three tiers of admission to Slide the City. The "Single Slider" ($15 pre-registration, $20 regular) allows you to slide once on the day of the event. The "Triple Slider" ($30 pre-registration, $35 regular) allows you to shoot the flume three times that day, while the "VIP Slider" ($50 pre-registration, $55 regular) allows you to slide to your heart's content, and also includes a tube, a t-shirt, a water gun and a Slide the City Hat.

Given that pretty much the only long, straight drag in town with even a hint of a hill is the one right in front of the State Capitol building, we're betting that's the spot for Little Rock. Fayetteville, which is sick with good sliding hills, should have a lot more options.

Come on back, summer. We're ready to slide.
