There was a time that I would be on my way down Garland street in Hot Springs and would see this plain white food truck with a crowd around it. After a couple months of noticing the crowd growing, I decided to stop and see what the fuss was about. What I found was Pupuseria Mi Chalateca Salvadoran food truck.

As I stood in line waiting to order, the thoughts of Mexican food ran through my mind. But after ordering and getting my food, I realized that was a mistake. Some of the flavors are the same, but most are totally different.

I had never had a pupusa before, and after stopping at what is now one of my favorites, I don’t know why I waited so long to try them. Pupusas are simple, but delicious. Imagine a thick corn tortilla, that is stuffed with your choice of cheese, meat, beans or a combination. They are cooked just as you would a pancake, and come to you piping hot off the griddle. You can also get some of their awesome tacos with your choice of fried pork, carne asada (steak), or chicken. They are topped with onions, cilantro, made with fresh made tortillas and are packed with flavor.

I am always greeted with a smile and never have a complaint with the quality of the food. Whether its the chicken tamale wrapped in banana leaf, tacos, various dinner specials, pupusa, or the Pupusa Loca (cheese pupusa topped with your choice of meat, onions, cilantro and cheese), you certainly cannot make a wrong choice. The aroma coming from the inside of the truck brings folks from blocks away. The fresh made flour tortillas helps to keep them coming back.

I made the mistake of showing up late one afternoon, just as the truck was closing. But with a big smile, the owner told me to wait just a minute. They opened just to make some tacos and a couple tamales for me. Can’t really get better service than that, can you?

Although food trucks aren’t as big a thing in Hot Springs as it is in other places, I believe the ladies of Pupuseria Mi Chalateca are a perfect fit in the Spa City food scene. They offer flavors that can’t be found anywhere else in town.

I strongly recommend Pupuseria Mi Chalateca. You can find them at 509 Garland Street in Hot Springs. If you have never had Salvadoran food before, you are really missing out on something great!
