Mylo to downtown outpost; find Jamerican food around the corner

Downtown fans of the pour-over, rejoice: Mylo Coffe Co., the hugely popular coffee, sandwich and pastry shop in Hillcrest, will have a Capitol Avenue outpost in coming months. Mylo is not even a year old, but already owner Stephanos Mylonas is ready to expand, thanks to his "great crew" and what he sees as a need for good coffee downtown. The cafe will be in the Sterling Building at Center and Capitol. Nearby will be the bricks and mortar restaurant of food truckers Southern Gourmasian.

Around the corner, in the newly named Charles Thompson (formerly the Mathis) building at Center and Sixth Street, John Walker Jr. is planning to relocate his Jerky's Spicy Chicken and More, now at 2501 S. Arch St. Max Brantley, our in-house connoisseur, says he had Walker's chicken at a function and that it was the best chicken he'd ever tasted. Walker calls his cuisine "Jamerican," thanks to its Jamaican influence.

Neither restaurant is going to open right away, but the announcements came today after a partnership including Christy and Jim Miners, the owners of EJ's Eats at 523 Center St., and Jordan Haas, the owner of the Sterling Building, closed on the Thompson building.

Mylonas says the new Mylo will be a bit bigger than the Kavanaugh Boulevard restaurant. The furniture and fixtures will be made just for the location, which with its concrete floors will have a more urban feel than the Hillcrest eatery. He says he believes there will be plenty of customers right away, and that developments on Main Street will make things just that much busier.

EJ's is now open for Sunday brunch, another indication that what the Downtown Partnership calls "Center City" is cooking.
