Semi-pornographic literary adaption "Fifty Shades of Grey" gets a nationwide theatrical release this weekend, and
according to Deadline Hollywood's survey of advance ticket sales, Arkansans are more excited about this than anyone else in the country other than Mississippi. Based on Fandango's summary of "state-by-state presales data," Arkansas ranks #2 nationwide. In general, it seems like the South is outperforming everyone in this respect. Deadline: "It’s a remarkable feat for a risque hard-R film in this region as exhibitors in this area of the country have refused to book NC-17 films."
Reporting on the phenomenon,
KATV spoke to the Christopher Grady, general manager of Chenal 9 IMAX in West Little Rock, who called it "probably the biggest non-holiday opening the theater has had since he's been working at the theater." “They are coming in for Valentine's Day,” Grady told them. “That's where most of our sales are right now is on Valentine's Day.”
