As much as I respect Ron Swanson, I do not share his enthusiasm for breakfast foods. My usual breakfast is a cup of coffee and whatever horrible thing at the gas station looks the least like I'll remember it in an hour. But sometimes I find myself out and about and hungry before lunch, and I'm forced to go wading into the land of breakfast foods. Luckily, I find that life is better with an egg on top, so this isn't usually a bad thing.

So, having told you all about how I don't care for breakfast, let me give you two breakfast dishes that just make a damned liar out of me because they are so delicious. The first, a pair of breakfast tacos with chorizo from Mugs Argenta Cafe, is quite possibly my favorite breakfast in town, despite the fact that breakfast tacos should really be served on flour tortillas. I can overlook that due to the spicy chorizo, perfectly fried eggs, and fresh vegetables and herbs that give the whole affair a spicy, tasty kick that always leaves me sad when the last bite is gone. A perfectly fried egg should have a creamy yolk that is just between being runny and solid, giving everything a luscious, custard-like sheen: Mugs knows exactly how to do it.

My other breakfast stop of late is Sweet Soul in the River Market's Ottenheimer Hall, home of some of the best chicken and waffles in town. On a recent visit, their waffle iron was on the fritz, so I opted for a bacon, egg and cheese croissant, and while the egg on this sandwich wasn't as well-done as the one from Mugs, the addition of about a half-pound of crispy bacon really made me not care a lick. It's the most basic sandwich possible: cheese, protein, protein again and bread, but there something about that comforting mix of ingredients that leaves a body feeling warm and happy—and ready to tackle the day.

So where's your favorite breakfast served? What am I missing by not eating morning food more often? Let me know down there in the comments.
