For the love of pecan pie

  • Pecan pie from Mason's

After writing recently about the Zagat guide naming Franke's Karo Nut Pie the top dessert in Arkansas, I got to thinking about how much I love the stuff. My mom and sister both make a really good pecan (pronounced PEE-can) pie, and although it's a total gooey sugar bomb, I love the stuff. I don't eat it very often, but every so often I get a craving for it, especially this time of year. And two great spots for good pecan pie can be had in downtown Little Rock—in the same building no less. You can't beat that!

First up, pecan pie from Mason's Deli in Ottenheimer Hall. Normally, I go to Mason's for cannoli, but that may change after a slice of their delightful pie. Tender pecans are perched atop a filling that is velvet-smooth and not at all runny. The crust is flaky and good, and the pie is baked perfectly. This is a perfect piece of pie.

Almost as good as Mason's pie was the version from just down the hall at the Four Square Gifts counter. This pie was a little overcooked for my taste, but the filling and pecans were delightful. This is an easy pie to overcook, and that ring of too-brown crust on the outside is a disappointment—but as long as the sugary middle is good, I am happy.

So those are the two best pies I've eaten lately—tell me about yours. Doesn't have to be pecan, just get down there in the comments and let's talk pie.
