The Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, Ninth and Broadway, opens “African American Treasures from the Kinsey Collection,” art, artifacts and documents amassed by Bernard and Shirley Kinsey, on Friday, April 8. There will be a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. that evening with music by the Rodney Block Collective.

The collection has been on tour throughout the nation, most recently at Disney's Epcot in Florida, and includes such items as a first-edition copy of poetry by Phyllis Wheatley (1773); an early draft of the Emancipation Proclamation; letters from Malcolm X to Alex Haley; and baptismal record dating back to 1595 and marital records from 1598 – the earliest known documentation of the African-American presence in America. There are also artworks in the collection, including paintings and sculpture by significant artists such as Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, John Biggers and Alma Thompson.
