Sanderia Faye’s “Mourner’s Bench: A Novel” has been nominated for the Hurston/Wright Foundation’s Legacy Award for Black Literature in the category of debut fiction.

Set in a fictional Arkansas town called Maeby, the novel incorporates figures from Arkansas history like Daisy Bates and civil rights attorney John Walker, “Mourner’s Bench” is what Kirkus calls “an absorbing meditation on the meaning of religion in a small town as well as a keen-eyed perspective on the way one African-American community encountered the civil rights movement.”
