Why is God punishing Oklahoma?

Posted By on Sun, Aug 5, 2012 at 2:33 PM

On the way to Elk City, we passed a grass fire, the ominous black smoke rising hundreds of feet into the air. Even passing in the car on the freeway, we could see that the flames were higher than a house.

Friday night, watching the news, we saw coverage of yet another fire, which destroyed the homes of many residents.

That same night, as we had dinner downtown just after seven, I looked over at the bank’s time and temperature sign across the street, and the heat registered at 112 degrees Fahrenheit.

Lakes are at record low levels.

River beds are dry.

Crops are dying.

If this were happening in Louisiana (especially around New Orleans), California or even Vermont, the letters columns of daily newspapers would be ablaze with anger, accusing the residents of those areas of sin beyond almost all hope of redemption.

But Oklahoma?

Where state legislators worry about women being “tricked” into having abortions?

Oklahoma?

A state where a bill proposed earlier this year would require those lax fellows at the state board of education to aid in "critical thinking, logical analysis, open and objective discussion of scientific theories including, but not limited to, evolution, the origin of life, global warming, and human cloning.”

Proving to the world that education of the young is no laughing matter - because children, as the awful cliche goes, are, after all, the future - the bill added this at the end:

“It being immediately necessary for the preservation of the public peace, health and safety, an emergency is hereby declared to exist, by reason whereof this act shall take effect and be in full force from and after its passage and approval.”

You can’t protect those state borders soon enough, it seems.

The state where the rights of women to control what happens with their own bodies is firmly in the clutches of the League of Men with Bad Haircuts, and the state GOP truly seems more in favor of protecting rights of the sperm of rapists and incestuous family members than their victims.

A state of which, according to a researcher from the Tulsa City/County Library System, 43 percent reads at a rate of seventh grade level or lower.

Maybe God is mad at you, Oklahoma.

I mean, She could be, just a little bit.

I have no doubt, though, that somewhere in Oklahoma today, a newspaper is being printed with a dire warning from a letter writer warning that God is punishing the Sooner State because of her lax morals and that it is time to straighten up and fly right.

Abort Obama, Not the Unborn?

Just before we got to Oklahoma City, we passed one of those small billboards you so often see further back from the road, the sort that doesn’t promote TV stations, eateries or shoe stores.
Spray-painted in black against a white background, was the message:

Abort Obama
Not the Unborn

Well, okay. Little bit late for that now, I suppose, though I imagine that lots of folks have given it a thumbs-up as they have driven by.

I think that God is mad at you, Oklahoma.

When Walmart is the only bookstore in town

I have whined before about the lack of a decent bookstore in Elk City, and my occasional trips to Wally World in an attempt to find something to read when I haven’t brought enough in my Possibles Bag (look it up), but this time I took a really, really good look at what was, and what was not offered on the shelves.

Bearing in mind that what is offered on the shelves may not only mirror the political sense of a community, but can also be a form of social engineering, I offer the following titles as the only new political books which can be found in Elk City this week:

The Great Destroyer: Barack Obama's War on the Republic

The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House

Glenn Beck’s Cowards: What Politicians, Radicals, and the Media Refuse to say

The Harbinger: The Ancient Mystery that Holds the Secret to America’s Future

Walmart, for all its many other faults - and hey are legion - does at least offer a fairly broad spectrum of political and social thought in their book department. Not so here. The only political reading you are likely to find here will keep your temperature boiling, and do not offer much in the way of coherent, rational thought.

The expression “stranger in a strange land” never had truer meaning than standing amidst the Walmart book section in Elk City, Oklahoma.

Second Amendment News: Shooting at Sikh Temple, Wisconsin

As I write this, I am reading news online of the gunman who attacked worshippers at the Sikh temple in Oak Creak, Wisconsin. As I am writing, at least one person is dead and two have been wounded.

One of the wounded is in the surgical intensive care unit.

A successful man is he who received a great deal more from his fellow-men, usually comparably more than he corresponds in his service to them. - Albert Einstein
