Why is it that every time folks win an election - even when there is low voter turn out - they claim to have a “mandate from the people?”

Using the logic of Republicans who swept into office this month, I have rewritten my romantic history: all of the women who broke up with me did so because they were madly in love with me, and the fact that they are not with me now is just proof of their undying passion.

Yes, cue humourless conservatives, who will respond with hundreds of words to “prove” me wrong. How about just this once, let’s not, and say you did.

But as I write this, folks are almost literally dancing in the streets, believing that a “Republican majority” may not only be here to stay, but that the Democratic Party may be on the road to political extinction.

You know, just like when straight-faced political commentators were trying to convince us that the Tea Party had run out of steam, and that all they, too, would soon join the Bullmoose Party and the Shakers on the trash heap on history.

Every time the political pendulum swings, the side that momentarily gains altitude becomes so giddy that they actually forget the events of just a few hundred days before, when they were holding their heads in despair.

And to be brutally honest - and this would hold true for Democrats as well as Republicans - if you also count the number of nonvoters this year, the only mandate would be for the candidate marked “None of the Above.”

But hey, that would spoil the party, and all the pretentious Facebook posts, so let’s just not go there.
