Playing chicken with Cox Cable . . . and wondering when advertisers will begin to be annoyed

I wouldn’t mind so much, but for the fact that The X Files is making its return to TV this month. I suppose I should express some Internet Outrage over this, but I was planning on buying it on DVD anyway . . .

Still, the current game of brinksmanship between Cox Cable and our local NBC/Fox affiliates seems not only a little silly, but I wonder at what point those who advertise on these stations will either want a refund, or a reduction in their advertising fees.

A business pays money, after all, so that their commercials can be . . . oh, what’s the word? Oh yeah, watched.

The more viewers the better. And the fewer the number of folks who view those commercials?

I’m not Stephen Hawking, but even I can spot the birth of an economic black hole when it is on the horizon.

It was in my mind to write “event horizon,” but that would have settled my hash, I think, as far as pretending to be half-way intelligent.

And I have to tell you this - as a former member of Fayetteville’s Telecommunications Board, it’s just not in my nature to take the side of Cox on any particular issue, but really, I think that the stations who are playing chicken are going to lose money in the long run.

And try explaining that one to your shareholders.

Quote of the Day

Why should we tolerate a diet of weak poisons, a home in insipid surroundings, a circle of acquaintances who are not quite our enemies, the noise of motors with just enough relief to prevent insanity? Who would want to live in a world which is just not quite fatal? - Rachel Carson
