In the age of Trump, Fayetteville City Council makes foolish decision

Posted By on Wed, Dec 6, 2017 at 1:40 PM

Legislative bodies often make the tragic mistake of believing that everybody who follows them down the road will have the same world view as they do. Victor Hugo reminds us that good government legislates with the future in mind, and I’m not sure we saw a lot of that last week.

This is actually a lot better opening than my original, which went along the lines of:

Damn you, Fayetteville City Council, for putting me and John LaTour on the same page.

In the matter of Kyle Smith, who may well have won a special election for the vacated city council seat in Ward 4, well, I’m pretty sure that, as they say in the movies, they have not heard the last of of this.

I have nothing against Kyle Smith, who may well make an admirable alderman. My ire, such as it is, is for a city council which made a decision with such bewildering rapidity.

A - Those who are upset about the brief period of time in which to apply for the seat have every right to be upset, especially as this is an appointment for three years.

B - In the age of Trump, when democracy is under attack from all quarters, a special election is always preferable to appointment to fill an elective seat, especially when, as someone pointed out above, it is for three years.

C - Not having a special election, age of Trump or not, is giving campaign fodder for anyone opposing any and all of those who voted to fill a three year term with an appointment, and not by voting for a special election. If they think this will not be revisited during the 2018/2020 election seasons, well, they may be a little naive.

Please, please don’t do this again - especially in the age of Trump.
