On the road again! How I love to write on the road again . . .

Oh, what a joy it is be finally be at the spot where one will spend the holidays - arriving despite getting road directions largely from the “We don’t cotton to strangers around here” crowd.

Dark highways with no living soul around for miles naturally puts one in mind of Children of the Corn, and all of its abominable sequels. Wal-Marts with gargantuan customers, fast food places that can’t quite get a simple order right. Fog.

The place we have rented has DISH TV this year, but no news outlets are included in the package. No Al-Jazeera, no FOX, no CNN, no MSNBC. Local stations are offered, but local TV news anywhere, well . . .

Still have BBC online, though, and if I want truly in-depth news coverage I can always check out the latest Facebook memes, I suppose.

In a pig’s eye.

One of my idiosyncrasies - among many, I’ll admit - is picking up local newspapers every time we stop for gas or coffee. This is some of what I have learned so far this trip.

In one small town in southern Arkansas a young man tried to buy a cell phone, using two one hundred dollar bills, clearly marked “For Motion Picture Use Only.”

They hadn’t caught him yet, but I have a feeling his continued freedom isn’t a sure thing.

picked up a copy of The Eudora Enterprise, notable chiefly for carrying a political cartoon - at least that day - from Americans for Limited Government. Like most cartoons from political organizations, be they liberal or conservative, the humor, such as it is, is engraved with a hammer and chisel.

You want subtle? Don’t go to political groups for their offerings. Hell, really, if you just want funny, avoid such groups like the plague.

Picked up the Clarion Ledger, which is part of the “USA Today network,” meaning it has a smattering of local/state news and several inserts from USA Today. As opposed to some of my more snobbish friends I sort of like USA Today, but I believe a local paper should be, well, a local paper. If folks want USA Today, they should buy it separately.

Now that I am finally relaxing, I’ll be writing more from the Beach at the End of the Universe.

Just whent to Google, and typed in “Joan Baez - YouTube” and let the results wash over me as I wrote this morning.
