College Republican Resigns Over Racist Remarks

I'll give them credit, the Republicans have been disciplined about avoiding racial slurs or even code words so far in the presidential race. Apparently not all of them got the message.

Adam LaDuca, 21, who was at the time the executive director of the Pennsylvania Federation of College Republicans, wrote on his Facebook page in late July that Obama has "a pair of lips so large he could float half of Cuba to the shores of Miami (and probably would.)"

LaDuca, who previously had called Martin Luther King Jr. a "pariah" and a "fraud," also wrote: "And man, if sayin' someone has large lips is a racial slur, then we're ALL in trouble."

Of course, he was made to resign and all the proper condemnations were made.

What part does race play in this election? It's hard to tell. There has been talk of the "Bradley Effect" where white voters say in polls they will vote for a black candidate (named after Tom Bradley, who ran for governor of California) and then change their mind at the voting booth.  I'm not sure this so called effect is scientific enough to be considered significant, or even that their data is that meaningful. Any poll has a margin of error and in this election, if there is a so-called Bradley Effect, I think it will be statistically insignificant or at least unreliably measurable.

  • I want my two dollars !!!

In the movie, "Better Off Dead," with John Cusack, there is this sub-plot of the local newspaper delivery boy stalking Cusack to get his $2.  Some people will go to great lengths to get their $2 in real life as well.

In an interesting twist, the Arkansas Supreme Court today amended Ark. Sup. Ct. Rule 5-2 and will now allow all cases to be cited, doing away with the distinction between published and unpublished opinions.

  • Cats and dogs

I've always been leery of people who dislike animals. To my wife and me, a house without dog hair in the corners and a cat perched on the windowsill is as barren as a highway rest stop. We're down to three dogs and two cats, the smallest menagerie we've had for years.
