Killing time

Posted By on Sun, Sep 17, 2006 at 10:43 AM

It's Sunday morning.  I've posted about the Toronto International Film Festival and it's surprise winner.  We're in for a full day of rain, which makes movie watching an ideal activity (I'm off to The Last Kiss at noon).  I suppose we could talk about the Razorbacks, but what would be the point.  The defense is awful and the head coach isn't much better.

The New York Times has a few interesting articles.  Notably, an article about Jackie Earle Haley.  Who?  He played Kelley Leek in the original The Bad News Bears.

Some yahoo named David Thompson has written a biography of Nicole Kidman.  The NY Times book reviewer wrote,

“In searching commentary on films,” he wrote, “there needs to be some way of accommodating the fondness, the rapture, the attraction (there are other words) the writer feels for an actress.” Fondness? Attraction? What Thomson has is a full-blown obsession, and it has erupted into his latest book, “Nicole Kidman.” Ostensibly a critical biography, it comes off as a weird and unseemly mash note."

Here's more from the review,

“I should own up straightaway that, yes, I like Nicole Kidman very much,” he says at the start. “I suspect she is as fragrant as spring, as ripe as summer, as sad as autumn and as coldly possessed as winter.” He loves her “hide-and-seek eyes,” her “pampered, cherished face” and “that elegant Australian body,” which “has sometimes shone like a lighthouse in sex scenes.” He says, “That’s why I’m writing this book, I think, to honor desire.”

Yuck.  This book sounds stupid.

It's the slowest for movies. "Watchmen," the much anticipated film adapted from, arguably, the greatest graphic novel of all time, has stirred the emotions of critics.
