InContention.com's Oscar charts

Lots of attention given to Dreamgirls.  Some surprises on Kris Tapley's chart, including Will Smith for The Pursuit of Happyness, Meryl Streep ahead of Penelope Cruz (although barely),and Abigail Breslin, the delightful Olive in Little Miss Sunshine sneaking in for best supporting actress.

Granted, there are predictions some 4 months before nominations are announced, but Tapley has access to early screeners and was all over the Toronto Festival.  Oscarwatch.com often sites to him and his predictions, from what I can tell, are relatively accurate.

One thing is for sure, no one is going to be able to say it's a bad year for movies.  Both the best actor and best actress categories are absolutely loaded.  Just think, there's a possibility that Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, and Robin Williams, all former Oscar winners or nominees and all with very promising films out this year, could be shut out.

Right now, Peter O'Toole is the favorite!

In the best actress category, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Renee Zellweger, and Nicole Kidman, all former Oscar winners and worthy of nomination by all estimation, could also be left out.

And it's not a bunch of no-names filling up the ballot.

Thanks to Philip Martin for a shout-out in his Friday MovieStyle column.  I haven't posted my Netflix queue in a while, so here it is.Frozen River; Miracle at St. Anna; Hellboy II: The Golden Army; Happy-Go-Lucky; and Cadillac Records - - all 2008 releases that I missed.

It's the slowest for movies. "Watchmen," the much anticipated film adapted from, arguably, the greatest graphic novel of all time, has stirred the emotions of critics.
