Philip Martin gives 'The Departed' an A

Martin Scorsese's The Departed is close to a perfect movie, a poignant cousin to The Great Gatsby and as violent as America itself.  It is wicked good . . .

. . .Scorsese pulls it all together - cuts are snappy and his camerawork effectively invisible.  He can't help but pay a little tribute to Carol Reed's The Third Man (1949), but the over aesthetic of the film is economical and powerful.  All the fat's been carved away.  This is an American classic, one for the ages - and for our present moment.
