On books and good food

Posted By on Sun, Jan 21, 2007 at 9:19 AM

After my back-to-back movie fest yesterday, I caught up with my moviegoing friend for dinner at The Faded Rose.  Stuffed mushrooms, barbecued shrimp, a filet mignon with lots of olive oil and butter, wine.  The soaked salad is hard to beat at Ed David's joint on Rebsamen Park road.  After that I was coerced into a trip to the mall (I hate the idea of the mall, which should not be confused with hating the mall.  I do hate going there, though).  Turns out Brentano's book store closed it's doors forever last night at 9:00.  I snuck in a picked up a few titles for almost nothing, including Zoe Heller's novel "What Was She Thinking?: Notes on a Scandal," the book behind the film starring Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett.  Cormac McCarthy's "No Country for Old Men," which the Coen brothers are adapting for release this year also made my its way with me.

Thanks to Philip Martin for a shout-out in his Friday MovieStyle column.  I haven't posted my Netflix queue in a while, so here it is.Frozen River; Miracle at St. Anna; Hellboy II: The Golden Army; Happy-Go-Lucky; and Cadillac Records - - all 2008 releases that I missed.

It's the slowest for movies. "Watchmen," the much anticipated film adapted from, arguably, the greatest graphic novel of all time, has stirred the emotions of critics.
