'Venus' and 'Factory Girl'

Venus, what a wonderful little film.  The entire cast, from Mr. O'Toole on down is marvelous.  It worked for me from beginning to end.  As for Mr. O'Toole's elusive Oscar, I'd give it to him.  Is he deserving?  Sure he is.

Factory Girl, on the other hand, is a horrible mess.  I'm not sure what George Hickenlooper was thinking when he decided to make this movie.  Guy Pearce plays a fine Warhol and Sienna Miller creates an interesting Edie Sedgwick, but boy does this film bomb.  Hayden Christensen as a young Bob Dylan?  No, it doesn't work.

I went a bit crazy at the DVD store picking up copies of "The Departed," "The Color of Money," "Raging Bull," "Half Nelson" and "Double Indemnity."  Looking forward to "The Prestige" which is out tomorrow.

Thanks to Philip Martin for a shout-out in his Friday MovieStyle column.  I haven't posted my Netflix queue in a while, so here it is.Frozen River; Miracle at St. Anna; Hellboy II: The Golden Army; Happy-Go-Lucky; and Cadillac Records - - all 2008 releases that I missed.

It's the slowest for movies. "Watchmen," the much anticipated film adapted from, arguably, the greatest graphic novel of all time, has stirred the emotions of critics.
