Oscar's greatest crimes

Posted By on Fri, Feb 23, 2007 at 11:14 AM

Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction; Marty Scorsese losing for "Raging Bull" and "Goodfellas," Alfred Hitchcock never winning; Marisa Tomei and Halle Berry; "Oliver!" beating "2001: A Space Odessey;" "Rocky" in 1976 . . .

There's so much more: Peter O'Toole losing to Cliff Robertson in 1968; Robert Benigni (who?) wininng over Tom Hanks, Ian McKellan, Ed Norton and Nick Nolte in 1998; "Sunset Blvd." shut out in 1950; "Bugsy" shut out in 1991; Catherine Zeta-Jones for "Chicago;" and "Crash" over "Brokeback Mountain," last year, to name a few.  If "Little Miss Sunshine," wins Best Picture, you can add it to the list.

Thanks to Philip Martin for a shout-out in his Friday MovieStyle column.  I haven't posted my Netflix queue in a while, so here it is.Frozen River; Miracle at St. Anna; Hellboy II: The Golden Army; Happy-Go-Lucky; and Cadillac Records - - all 2008 releases that I missed.

It's the slowest for movies. "Watchmen," the much anticipated film adapted from, arguably, the greatest graphic novel of all time, has stirred the emotions of critics.
