The Little Rock Film Festival announced an impressive line-up of films, particularly for a first effort.  A nice balance of narrative and documentary features, the schedule seems to offer a little something for everyone.  Passes to the festival are on sale now for the bargain price of $20.00.  The Festival begins Thursday night, May 17th.

After a quick glance at the schedule, here's a list of films that jumped out at me (in no particular order):

"The Situation," the first feature length narrative picture to discuss the situation in Iraq.  The film stars Connie Nielsen and is directed by Philip Haas.  The film will show on Thursday, May 17th at 7:00 at Riverdale, with a Q & A with the director to follow as well as an after-party at the Peabody Hotel at 9:30.

"The War Tapes, " a dcoumentary feature about the Iraq War. (Fri. May 18th, 1:00pm, Riverdale)

"Knocked Up" from the director of "The 40 Year Old Virgin."  (Sat., May 18th, 7:00, Riverdale)

"Old Joy," about two pals who reunite for a camping trip in Oregon. (Fri., May 18th, 7:30 pm., Riverdale, Sat. May 19th, 12:00pm, Riverdale)

"Killer of Sheep," a film about life in Watts in 1970's. (Fri., May 18th, 6:10 pm., Riverdale, Sat., May 19th, 3:45pm, Riverdale)

"Offside" about women's rights in Iran.  (Fri., May 18th, 8:00pm., Riverdale, Sat. May 19th, 1:10 pm, Riverdale, Q&A with the director to follow)

"Towncraft" about the Little Rock, Arkansas music scene.  (Fri., May 18th, 7:00, Riverdale, Sat. May 19th, 6:15, Riverdale; Q &A's with filmmakers to follow both films).

Kudos to all the folks involved with making this happen and to the sponsors for backing it.

Thanks to Philip Martin for a shout-out in his Friday MovieStyle column.  I haven't posted my Netflix queue in a while, so here it is.Frozen River; Miracle at St. Anna; Hellboy II: The Golden Army; Happy-Go-Lucky; and Cadillac Records - - all 2008 releases that I missed.

It's the slowest for movies. "Watchmen," the much anticipated film adapted from, arguably, the greatest graphic novel of all time, has stirred the emotions of critics.

  • City ethics update; campaign limit was supposed to help the little guy

Some more history on the Little Rock city ordinance that limits candidates for mayor and City Board to raising campaign funds to five months before the November 2018 election. It raises questions not only about Warwick Sabin's fund-raising tactics, but also Mayor Mark Stodola's carryover money.
