Re: “Ole Miss shelving Col. Reb

As an Ole Miss Alum (but lifelong Razorback fan), my favorite part of the Ole Miss issue is the students drive to name Admiral Akbar as their mascot. You may remember that Admiral Akbar was the leader of the Rebel Alliance in the Star Wars movies. Apparently they have been turned down by Lucas Films; but it would have been awesome.

Re: “Polling and pot

The cost that the prosecution of marijuana offenders adds to our criminal justice system is miniscule. Very few, if any, first, second, or third time offenders do any time at all. In fact, there is probably a surplus to the system as a result of fines paid and civil forfeitures of vehicles used to transport.

There may be a net increase in revenue from legalization if taxes are high enough--pun intended--but to say there is a high cost to the system right now is simply not true. Despite conventional wisdom, prosecutors, judges, and juries do NOT put marijuana users in prison unless they are also committing other serious crimes.

Re: “Might Shoffner get an opponent?

Although the Democrat proclaimed Bobby Tullis "Born to Audit" back in the Democratic primary for Auditor in 1994, after being defeated by Gus Wingfield, Mr. Tullis went on to become entangled in the Bill McCuen flag affair and apparently narrowly avoided indictment along with his friend. He may not be the strongest candidate to take on Shoffner over ethics.
