Re: “A throwback

HB's is an old-style Little Rock eatery of the kind that existed before all the flashy-trendy places sprang up. It's complacent with what it is. Its customers (fiercely loyal, as seen in the comments) are complacent with what it is. Sounds like HB's has figured out how to maintain a nice profit margin with low-cost Sysco/Ben Keith canned food, short open hours, cooking only certain amounts of food so there's no waste, no payback to credit card processors, which can range from 1.5% for Visa to 3% for American Express. (Restaurants, or any businesses, that accept credit or debit cards add that cost to their products, thus the customer actually pays the fee.) HB's appears to have a business plan that works for them but not for the reviewer.

It seems the reviewer was trying to offer some constructive criticism without understanding that HB's is not interested in the 2017 rat-race of glitz and expansion and chasing trends. HB's appears not to have much, if any, competition near its location. It can do what it wants, however it wants, while operating at a low cost and turning a comfortable profit (which is not easy to do without alcohol, which restaurants mark up at extortion prices).

That said, HB's could use a little sprucing up (the last time I was there I was a little uncomfortable with the hygienics), a menu overhaul (for the unwary customer, such as the reviewer) and a big sign on the door that says CASH ONLY.

Ding ding ding! Goofy90214 just got his weekly bonus from his troll masters. Congrats, Goof! You almost missed the deadline for your weekly quota. Keep at it and you'll get the front-door parking spot for "Bannon's Favorite Troll of the Month."

Re: “Staffing dozens short at Tucker Max, where breakouts occurred UPDATE

Normally, Asa would have a serious talk with an incompetent department head. But he and the legislature will never raise a stink because they know the only solution is money. And the only way to get money is to raise taxes.

Wendy and Asa are taking a page from Chief Buckner's book on management: Pretend the problem doesn't exist and maybe it'll go away.

Re: “The open line and daily video roundup

Max or Lindsey, I'm a subscriber to the Arkansas Times blog and I would like to contribute to independent journalism through the Arkansas Times Tip Jar, but I absolutely refuse to use Peter Thiel's PayPal and I urge everyone else to avoid using PayPal for anything. Is there another way to contribute?

Re: “Hillcrest purchase adds to potential redevelopment plot on Kavanaugh

Perhaps Mr. Martin and Anita Davis could collaborate to create a Bernice Garden on the Boulevard.

Re: “State School Board member 'sick' of hearing about Little Rock School District; backers demand apology

Can we build a wall around El Dorado to prevent lunatics like Brett Williamson and Trent Garner from inflicting more damage on our poor state?

What's going on in El Dorado in that it produces so many strutting martinets?
