Re: “Occupy Little Rock occupies Clinton Library grounds

Do you always attack the Straw Man Lee? Its just easier for you isn't it?

Of course the government shouldn't do any of those things, but they aren't necessary to guarantee every individual's free speech.

As for being a constructionist, it sucks being foisted on your own petard.

Re: “Occupy Little Rock occupies Clinton Library grounds

I can't think of a more constructivist argument than the Roberts Court in Citizens United. Where in the Constitution does it say that money = speech? It doesn't.

If money = speech, then it follows that more money = more speech. Since one is not guaranteed "more speech" by the First Amendment this argument fails.

Actually, Lee, the First Amendment only applies to government, it does not apply to personal relationships or relationships between organizations and their members.

So no, speech IS NOT speech no matter the speaker, it only matters if it is the government trying to subdue the speech.

Re: “Occupy Little Rock occupies Clinton Library grounds

Next week the Mid-South Sociological Association is meeting at the Doubletree. Many of our members have participated in Occupy demonstrations around the country, we even have a few who won't be at the meeting because they are occupying in their local community. I'm sure you'll meet a few of us stopping by to see how things are going and add our support to your efforts.

If any of you are interested, next Saturday the 29th @ 11:30 am, there is a lecture by one of the world's foremost scholars on inequality, Göran Therborn from Cambridge University, who will speak on the “Dynamics of (In)Equalities”. This event is free and open to the public. Just go to the Palisades room at the Little Rock-Doubletree.

Erik Olin-Wright, president of the American Sociological Association and professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and one of the foremost experts on inequality in America, will also be there. Both of these scholars plan to visit the occupation and add what support they can.

If anyone has any questions about these events or would like to meet with these scholars please contact me at this email, .

I look forward to meeting the occupiers of Little Rock.

Mark Konty
President-Elect and Program Chair
Mid-South Sociological Association
