  • Commission holds public hearing on banning new large hog farms in Buffalo River Watershed

The latest on a proposed ban on new controlled animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in the Buffalo National River Watershed. The proposed rules would only impact permitting for new operations, not C&H Hog Farm, the 6,500-hog facility in Mt. Judea near Big Creek, one of the largest tributaries of the Buffalo National River, raising concerns about environmental impacts. The coalition behind the proposed ban also continues to apply pressure on C&H, hoping that the farm will move out of the watershed. Photographer Kat Wilson took aerial photos of the farm and the surrounding watershed on a recent flyover tour.

Re: “The Arkansas Traveler

Wonderful story! I think it's great that you wore your Hillary T-shirts and spread the good word. I only wish more people had done that.

My older son attended ASMSA back about 20 years ago. It was such a great opportunity for him and a fine deal for me to go to Hot Springs to take him or pick him up from school until he turned sixteen. Rocky's Corner was always brought home to the younger son. I'm not sure when he took English, but you might have been his teacher. Small world.

Keep on witnessing for Hillary! Surely this nightmare will be over soon. I pray for this every night.

Re: “The job

Wonderful observations as usual, but special this week. I echo Suzanne - thank you, thank you, thank you! The work you both do is so important.

Re: “A blog friend, Richard Boosey Jr., passes

I'm so sorry to hear this. He will be missed here. He was always a gentleman, and I always enjoyed and appreciated his posts. May he rest in peace. Sympathy to the family.

Re: “Alert: Buffalo River power play looming at legislature

I'm sure Farm Bureau is against the dicamba ban because Monsanto (Monsatan) has so much money to donate. I hate them for a personal reason: My little dog had a stroke in August 2016 because the yard man sprayed his exercise pen with Round-Up (glyphosate) and I didn't know about it. He spent a lot of time out there. He's still with us, but he has residual problems from his stroke. So I hate Monsatan forever, but I'm sure Farm Bureau likes them because they are very, very rich.

No, I don't think the Buffalo River has a chance with this bunch of nutcases in the legislature, probably because I am never high. It's a crying shame is what it is, and anyone who has a hand in allowing this hog shit attack on the Buffalo National River should be sent to the hog farm to pick up hog shit, bag it up, and take it home with them, including the legislators who vote to allow this.

Re: “Jason Rapert v. the Friendly Atheist

In a country that actually went and elected donald j trump president, can we really be so surprised that his constituents in and around Bigelow elected RAPErt?? It seems that ignorance is in and intelligence is out.

Re: “Over the hump

Who else thinks we should start a betting pool -- How long will Rapert's new Ten Commandments monument stay upright this time? He doesn't have the sense God gave a goose, but I honestly don't see why people try to do these religious things mixed in with politics. It never works out well.

Re: “Hogs don't bring out the crowds to War Memorial

If that birth certificate dude, Mr. Lesnick, had watched part of the local NWA pregame show I watched, he would have seen that, before five o'clock, there were very few people there and fine places to park.

Little Rock football game days used to be a day of shopping and dining out in cool places you missed if you ever lived in Little Rock. For me, that meant no shopping (I don't like shopping or crowds) and a long meal at the Oyster Bar. But there was lots of shopping and eating done in Little Rock on game days; most people made a day of it. I don't see why that should change if the games were played on Saturday.

I figure having the game on a Thursday night probably contributed to the low attendance. I know that TV money is great, but it most likely did keep people at home on a week night.

I'd hate to see the Little Rock games end, but I can understand that it is an away game and evidently that's a lot of extra work for the team and its crew. But Razorback football wouldn't be the same without one or two games at War Memorial. Sometimes it has to be about building goodwill instead of making money -- doesn't it?
