New on Rock Candy

Better be busy whittlin' or working that jigsaw. The Rock Candy 500 pinewood derby is just around the corner. On Thursday, April 9, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., we'll race homemade derby cars on a 40-foot track that on loan from the Boy Scouts in the River Market Pavilion. Prizes will be awarded for speed, paint, design, best kid's entry (under 14) and best of show. The entry fee is $8 in advance or $10 the day of the race. You'll find an entry form on page 14 of this issue. All proceeds benefit Boy Scout Troop 5, chartered by Easter Seals Arkansas. Find a complete list of rules and everything else you need to know on Rock Candy.

Bonnie Montgomery, a Searcy native currently living in Nashville, is putting the finishing touches on “Billy Blythe,” a one-act opera on the life of a young Bill Clinton. The name comes from the former president's birth name, which he changed at 12. Read more online.

This week in our video player, the first edition of a new Times video series, “Rock Candy Presents: Live at the White Water.” Produced by Gred Spradlin (video), Jason Weinheimer (audio) and Robyn Friday (audio), the series captures local musicians, in high quality audio and video, performing live.

The first video finds joshua, lead singer of Velvet Kente, playing solo and acoustic.

Look for video of the See, Shannon Boshears, Flash LaRue, Kyoto Boom and Kevin Kerby in the not-too-distant future, too.

Local writer and editor Paul Reyes has been nominated for a National Magazine Award for his piece, from last October's Harper's, on the mortgage crisis.

Ageless weirdo Dan Hicks, who, like Gen. MacArthur, was born in Little Rock into a military family and moved as a toddler, has a new album with his longtime band the Hot Licks. It's called “Tangled Tales,” and you can preview a track and watch a video online.
