Many more mass shootings like the one last week in Roseburg, Ore., will stain the future and no law will pass that might reduce the carnage. That is not a prediction but a fact of life that is immune even to Hillary Clinton.

Re: “Hutchinson adds members to school safety task force

Loads of research have already been done on this issue. But none of it points to more guns as the solution for our gun problem. It's egregious that Asa is trying to force a different result by not even allowing this commission to consider gun violence prevention legislation. Their hands are tied if they're not even allowed to look at what we know is the only real solution to the problem. What's the point?

Re: “Cities and states move to ban bump stocks, used in Las Vegas massacre

I find the comment by Steven E to be absolutely ridiculous and condescending, much as I find so many snide comments by gun enthusiasts who seem to be saying that anyone who doesn't know everything there is to know about firearms has no place in discussing gun safety. By that thinking, anyone who is not a heroin addict should not weigh in on opiate addiction. Anyone who has never been in prison should not weigh in on criminal justice reform. Maybe instead of being total blowhards about gun trivia you guys could educate yourselves about why our gun death rate here in the US is 25 times higher than in any other developed nation.

Re: “Game and Fish Commission OKs open carry

Max, I think that depends on what kind of strap-on you're talking about. Otherwise, fair enough.

Re: “Game and Fish Commission OKs open carry

Unreal. I was a bit disappointed with Max Brantley a few weeks ago when he stated in a column that open carry is the law of the land. Is it? Our current AG says so, but the courts dont, and lawmakers who passed the bill a few years ago are on record saying open carry was not the intent. Furthermore, a bill explicitly allowing open carry introduced that same session failed. So Im surprised that we are ceding the line so easily to the gun nuts simply because Asa shared his opinion. He does not make the laws, so his opinion here should really not be worth much more than yours or mine. When laws are unclear, it is best for the courts to decide. When that happens we will have our answer, but not until then.

Re: “Democratic candidate withdraws to unite opposition to Charlie Collins

Adrienne Kvello is an amazing candidate, and I'm a little sad to see her leave this race. But I hear good things about Denise Garner, looking forward to getting to know her better. So excited to get rid of the patronizing, gun-loving, non-thinking rep they have now. Collins pushed guns on to our campuses, and now he's going to pay for that. Bye, Charlie.

Re: “Governor also sent message on open carry to prosecutors

Thanks, Larry Jegley. Wonder why Asa is reaching so much on this issue. Is Jan Morgan really that effective in fomenting extremism in Arkansas? Another example of how Asa is NOT a moderate. When push comes to shove, he goes far-right-wing every time.

Re: “Governor tells State Police 'open carry' is the law in Arkansas

I remember listening to Asa criticize Trump during the primaries. Since then, Asa has fallen in line with the extremists that have taken over the R party. This is just one example of the dangerous shifts happening in Arkansas and everywhere.
