Re: “The red states' addiction to welfare

Oh Holmes,
Much of Europe is doing much better than we are in both employment and debt as a %GDP. Then you have the PIIGS. The funny thing about those countries is that they all have very specific problems. High levels of corruption, large shadow economies, and widespread tax evasion. In other words, their deficits are due to low tax revenues.

So keep believing that Europe is some homogeneous wasteland. It will help the rest of us differentiate you from those whom are actually informed about global politics.

Re: “The myth of the tax deadbeats

Oh Snapback, you don't understand. If someone dies of starvation, it's their own fault because they didn't follow free-market capitalism closely enough. They deserve to die.

I mean, why should any good xtian have to actually follow Jesus' teachings, like "Sell your possessions and give to the poor" and "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven." He only said it like ten times, so it really can't be that important.

Re: “The truth about health care: Obamacare is working

Key phrase: "it rings hollow to anyone faintly interested in the truth." That's just it. The truth isn't important as long as Obama is out of the White House.

Re: “Atheists in Arkansas

T. Pope,

Your assumption that "god" requires faith rather than reason so that persons of any intelligence can go to heaven or whatever, is built upon another assumption that such an god would be content to attain believers in such a way. If a "god" were to exist, all that he would have to do is come to earth once a generation. Not that difficult. Instead, to make up for your deity's apparent stupidity, you make assumptions about him so that he fits into the confines of our world. Not much of a god.

Re: “Talking points on tax development slush fund

Out of curiosity, how would the research and technology park be private subsidy? From my understanding of the ARTP in Fayetteville, which is admittedly rather small, the university charges rent for the use of the park, but gives preference to research and tech companies, especially those who hire students. The main attraction to the park is the type of building, dedicated to wet and dry labs, etc, something that would be far to expensive for a startup company to have the capital for.

If I am wrong about any of this, which is quite possible, then it might truly be private subsidy. If not, then as long as the city isn't giving the money away and will make it back eventually, I don't see what is so wrong about it.

Also, is the Port Authority a private or public group?
