Re: “Charters not a choice for all

Thank you for your dedication to your school and your students. I can see you are passionate. However, I would like to clarify a few points in your post. First, you state that in order for students to be successful at a charter school that students do not require in-depth special education. This statement is false. I am a Special Education teacher at a charter school and the students I service have the full range of services. As you know charter schools are held to the same policies and regulations that are required by Federal and State laws, no exceptions. Second, you state that to be successful at a charter school students do not have or require a registered nurse. This statement is also false. I can tell you that at our charter schools, we have a registered nurse on each of our campuses. Third, you state that to be successful at a charter school students do not have or require counseling services. This statement is again another false statement. Again, I can tell you that we have contracted mental health services in all of our schools that includes counseling services. Finally, you state that to be successful at a charter school students do not have or require school nutrition services, which is false. Charter schools are held to the same child nutrition standards as any other school. As you know, this is how schools receive some of their funding. Our charter school has a full time district child nutrition coordinator and a school nutrition coordinator at each school. Additionally, we also have students that require McKinney-Vento services and we also provide these services. I just wanted to post corrected information, because I am also passionate about my school and students.
