All you need is love

But a pretty little package never hurts.

TRUFFLES: Find them at River City.
  • TRUFFLES: Find them at River City.

Valentine’s Day, romance, true love, yadda yadda. It was just too cold last week to get into the proper frame of mind — too bad you can’t shop wrapped up in a quilt in front of a roaring space heater — so you’re on your own with the mood-setting. But a few ideas if you’re still hunting for just the right something to wrap up in red:

• If your girl needs a new best friend, check out the diamonds and other baubles at Petite Pierre Fine Jewelry, 2611 Kavanaugh Blvd. in Hillcrest. The store carries some unusual designs and beautiful colored gemstones, along with some unusual antique pieces — like engraved sterling silver cuff bracelets and, something I’ve never seen before, small sterling silver chain-mail purses.

• Across the street at Box Turtle (2616 Kavanaugh Blvd.) pick up a heart-shaped throw rug for $22, or a funky heart-shaped fridge magnet for $3-$5. There’s plenty of non-Valentine’s Day merchandise on sale as well — lots of clothes, selected cosmetics and scented candles all half off, 20 percent off some leather handbags, 75 percent off Christmas items.

• If your sweetie’s the adventurous type — or you’d like them to be — Wordworth Books (5920 R St.) has a couple of fun possibilities. “1,000 Places to See Before You Die” ($19) is the traveler’s ultimate to-do list, with short profiles of locations and events ranging from the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines to the Pushkar Camel Fair in India. (None of the thousand places is in Arkansas, but Memphis lays claim to several, including Graceland.) Other possibilities: “The New InterCourses: An Aphrodisiac Cookbook” ($30) with recipes for mood-enhancing dishes ranging from oysters to chocolate to black beans (who knew?), and “That’s Amore: The Language of Love for Lovers of Language” ($15), which explores all kinds of interesting romance-related phrases and customs from around the world. Bored with “honey” and “sweetie pie”? Try out “min lilla sockertopp” — Swedish for “my little sugar top.”

• And last but absolutely not least, there’s the chocolate route. I’ve sung the praises of the hand-made truffles at River City Coffee and Tea (2715 Kavanaugh Blvd.) before, but they’re worth mentioning again. Or pick up a box of Valentine-colored jellybeans or some chocolate-covered espresso beans packaged in a coffee cup and saucer.

Finally, some non-Valentine’s Day notes:

Dreamweavers, the Little Rock-based home decor manufacturer, is holding its first Second Saturday sale of the year from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 10, at 1201 Spring St. (behind the Sonic on Broadway).

• There’s almost an entire room of half-price winter clothing at ShopTrio, the newish trendy women’s boutique at the corner of JFK Boulevard and C Street in North Little Rock. Sharagano wool pants, Free People shirts, a faux shearling poncho, lots of other stuff. And there are even a few XLs on the racks. Not on sale, but really cute: a double-breasted red trench coat with enormous buttons ($116).

Chameleon Art Glass has finished the move from its Heights store to a bigger space at 24907 Kent Lane, near Kanis and Ferndale Cutoff roads in West Little Rock.

• Early warning for anyone related to little ones: Two children’s consignment sales are going head-to-head in Little Rock in a few weeks. Rhea Lana’s is set for Feb. 28-March 3 at University Mall (www.rhealana.com or 450-3017 for details), and Duck Duck Goose is scheduled for March 1-3 at the State Fairgrounds (www.duckduckgoosesale.com).

A kiss on the hand may be
quite Continental …
