Re: “State Board votes to transfer Arkansas Governor's School to Arkansas Tech

The vote was 5 - 2 with Zook and Williamson in the minority, Barth abstained and Dean (as acting Chair) not voting.

Re: “Governor's School may move to Tech, and Rapert is hot about it

It looks to me like the scoring problems are pretty obvious. The agenda for the 9/13 ADE board meeting is available online, and the board's instructions were to recommend the school with the highest cumulative score, which was Hendrix. But they decided to recalculate using a different method than they were directed to use, and under that method ATU scored higher. It seems obvious which one the committee should recommend to the board. From that point the board can do what they want to do.

However, having now read both the Hendrix and ATU proposals, there are major changes to the curriculum in the ATU version. Why would they deviate so far from national best practices?

Re: “Early warning: Religious Right again is targeting Arkansas Governor's School

Christian discrimination? Isn't the most recent director of Governor's School a Presbyterian lay minister?

Re: “ABC board ponders medical marijuana rules on advertising, 'edibles,' transport and more

This is so much more strict than the handling of drugs like Fentanyl. Amazing!

Re: “We're over the hump — vote suppression rules

Has anyone noticed the budget in SB 122, particularly section 4? They are proposing a drastic change to the funding for Governor's Distinguished Scholarships. In the past they had about 300 scholarships a year and now they are budgeting for about 70. The extra 230 Arkansas students will simply take better scholarship offers out to state, sucking away our most precious resource.

Re: “Conway School Board protects church visits; speech for parents not so much

I was at last night's meeting and was surprised how few community members actually attended. Sure, in modern society folks have become complacent about keeping an eye on elected officials, but two television channels thought it was important enough to send a camera crew. Channel 7 even lead with the story on the night of the state of the union address.

The folks I spoke with seemed to be the ones who were concerned about the pastors visiting the school. I expected to see a big posse of ministers sitting in the front row and monitoring the body language of the board members. But they must have been busy recruiting at a 5th grade sports event instead.
