Timing is everything, and this is a catastrophe for Democrats. One of their major strategic plans for June 2016 was to accuse the Republican candidates, at the height of the primaries, of bigotry for their support of religious freedom laws, after the Supreme Court upholds gay marriage. Pence, in a brilliant, singlehanded stroke, moved this issue to 2015, taking all the fire in a non-election year, draining the issue of any significance in 2016. All that energy, dissipating into nothing. It's reminiscent of the way Cruz took all the shutdown furor upon himself a full year before the 2014 elections in which Republicans trounced Democrats. This lops a leg off the Democrats 4 corner table, slicing to pieces their chances of a Democratic Senate and President Hillary Clinton in the next cycle.
