Re: “In passing: James Merriweather, newsman

I went to school in Clinton with the Merriweathers through the 9th grade. When I was a freshman at the University of Arkansas in Conway, a slight uprising between the African Americans and whites at a basketball game. The game ended, but as we walked out of the gym, African American kids lined the sidewalk. I have to say, it was a little scary for a white kid with no experience in this area. (I didn't even know what the issue was, I was too busy experiencing the freedom of college!) All of a sudden, I heard my name called out. I looked over and there was James Merriweather with a big smile for me. He walked a little way with me and we chatted like nothing untoward was going on. I've thought of him and that incident many times over the years. He was a great guy.
