Re: “The Cinco de Mayo margarita guide

Excellent Joel and I have always like tequila in all its forms. Although I have to admit I probably like tequila sunrises more than margaritas. Blame it on my California days!

Re: “Jack Butler on writing for the Arkansas Times

Oh man, I loved Jack Butler's food columns. So great to read a column from him again. He was one of many great food writers at the Arkansas Times, including Kat Robinson and Michael Roberts.

Re: “On pasta

Mmmmmm Pasta. In my family we start eating pasta early, like baby food early. My great aunts from northern Italy used to cook pastina (tiny star-shaped pasta) in broth until tender and feed it to grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Then there was tortellini soup -- beef, spinach and cheese filled little wonders cooked in chicken broth and served with a sprinkle of parmesan. Oh heavenly joy!
My favorite pastas have changed over the years. As a kid, I loved angel hair pasta...really liked the texture. But as my tastes matured, I began to appreciate mostaccioli and rigatoni more and more for their slight chewiness and ability to grab onto the sauces. Nothing better than mostaccioli topped with sweet Italian sausage chunks with whole olives, mushrooms, tomatoes, and onions sautéed in olive oil. Delicioso!

Re: “Saucy

It's a little bit different than mine. The family recipe I always used doesn't have the red pepper flakes, and I was always told to warm any dried herbs in the oil with the onions and garlic before adding the tomatoes. But those minor differences are just probably regional as my family comes from the northern mountains. But, it does sound like an excellent sauce, will try it someday. It's also great with sausage and peppers to put over polenta.

Re: “Roberts vs. durian

I've always wodered about the Durian, ever since I've heard one described in a Jonathan Kellerman mystery decades ago. Good for you for being curious and adventurous.
