ASO’s Valentine gift: ‘He Said She Said’

SHE'LL SAY: Judy Kaye.
  • SHE'LL SAY: Judy Kaye.

Broadway stars Judy Kaye and Jeff Keller will highlight the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s Pops, Live! series salute to love and Valentine’s Day in “He Said She Said,” Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11, at Robinson Center Music Hall.

Both shows are at 8 p.m. Ticket prices range from $16 to $60.

ASO music director David Itkin is back on the stage as conductor after taking last weekend off while Marvin Hamlisch led the symphony in its SuperPops show. Through humorous dialogue and familiar hit music, the concert will show how the perspectives and expectations differ when two people meet and start a relationship. It becomes a Broadway “battle of the sexes.”

Among the songs featured will be “Before the Parade Passes By” from “Hello Dolly”; “I Get a Kick Out of You” from “Anything Goes;” “Show Me” from “My Fair Lady”; “Falling in Love With Love” from “Boys From Syracuse”; “You Could Drive a Person Crazy” from “Company”; “This Nearly Was Mine” from “South Pacific”; “Luck Be a Lady Tonight” from “Guys and Dolls”; “It’s Today” from “Mame”; “They Say It’s Wonderful” from “Annie Get Your Gun”; “Where or When” from “Babes in Arms,” and “Night and Day” from “Gay Divorce.”

Kaye starred in “Souvenir” on Broadway last fall and also recently performed with the New York City Opera in Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide.” She was Rosie in “Mamma Mia!” on Broadway, earning Tony and Drama Desk award nominations, and was a Tony Award winner in 1988 for the role of Carlotta in “The Phantom of the Opera.”

Among Keller’s many Broadway accomplishments is being one of the original stars of “Phantom of the Opera” and the first American to play the title role on Broadway. He starred in Harold Prince’s revival of “Candide” and played Perchik opposite Zero Mostel in the Broadway revival of “Fiddler on the Roof.” He created the role of crooner Johnny Cantone in “The 1940s Radio Hour,” earning a Drama Desk nomination.

  • Trump unfit

Even as an oligarch, President Trump turns out to be breathtakingly incompetent. Is there any reason to suppose he's even loyal to the United States? Does he even understand the concept? Trump is loyal to Trump, and to his absurdly swollen ego. Nothing and nobody else.

The nursing home industry and the chamber of commerce finally defeated the trial lawyers in the 2017 legislature. The Republican-dominated body approved a constitutional amendment for voters in 2018 that they'll depict as close to motherhood in goodness.
  • Goodbye, Mr. Trump

It is hard to escape the feeling that the fortunes of President Trump and the country took a decisive, and for Trump a fatal, turn May 9-10, when the president fired the director of the FBI over its investigation of Russian efforts to swing the presidential election to him and the very next day shared top-secret intelligence with Russian officials in an Oval Office meeting closed except to a Kremlin press aide toting electronic gear to capture the intimate session for Russians but not Americans.

Strained relations between the Arkansas Supreme Court and the Arkansas Court of Appeals broke into public view this week. I expect more to come.
