Re: “The best appetizers in Central Arkansas

The baba ganoush at Layla's--always a good decision.

Re: “Pizza Cafe's Take and Bake

I miss Kat, too, but there is nothing wrong with this review. A review is opinion and it reflects the opinions of the person. I like Arkansas Times' diversity. Lighten up a little, y'all. It's not like this blog has become completely vegetarian.

Re: “Going international at the Chenal Kroger

Some of us in Batesville call this "Disney Kroger" since it's like going to an amusement park of a grocery store. It's a lot of fun.

Re: “A small rant: Hunka Pie

One thing I've noticed up here in Batesville is that some people treat their restaurants or small businesses as hobbies rather than real businesses.

Re: “A few bits of Arkiana

Years ago I believe it was the Arkansas Times that listed some Arkansas expressions and here are my two favorite: "She's so ugly she could make a freight train take a dirt road," and "He's as nervous as a guy wearin' cheese underwear in an alley." Another one was heard at a bridge game in Warren from a woman expressing great surprise: "I liked to have passed a squealing worm!"

Re: “Cornbread: The Festival

One thing I do not understand about this event is amateur contenders having to provide a sample for a thousand people. I understand keeping the crowd happy, but that seems like a lot of effort for non-professionals who don't always have access to restaurant equipment, etc. to make that much.

Re: “Say McIntosh: The lion in winter

Enjoyed the article and some light shed on Say's actions and the motivations behind them. As a white person, I think it's important for me to listen to what black folks have to say. I may not agree, but it doesn't hurt to listen and try to understand another viewpoint. As for the sweet potato pie, Say's was the first I ever tried when I lived in LR. I make the pie all the time now and can't understand why anyone would choose pumpkin over sweet potatoe pie; my version is really good and people beg me for it, but it isn't the same as Say's. Wonder if he put a bit of lemon in his? I'll probably never know.
