Re: “WSJ examines Arkansas Medicaid denial of expensive drug for cystic fibrosis

I know of a family that received the combination drugs and she went from having only a few years left to lung function sky rocketing and no hospitalizations! Is it a lot of money? Yes, but if you compare the cost of the drugs annually to the typical four-a-year stays in the hospital, it actually comes out cheaper for Medicaid to just pay for the drug. None of us in the Arkansas TEFRA Medicaid system want to overburden the system (which, by the way, most people -including us - pay premiums to), however to deny anyone to something that will drastically affect this disease is criminal. In addition, let me state that not all of the people on this TEFRA Medicaid program (it is a separate and specialized section of Medicaid specifically for children with life-threatening diseases) only have this insurance. Our son is on three private insurances (his father's, mine, and his step-father's) at a cost of more than $1,100 monthly that pay before TEFRA (which costs us $90 a month to have) even touches his medical bills. Even with these four insurances, we still pay hundreds of dollars out of pocket a month for items that are desperately needed but not covered under any of the insurances. This is in addition to more than $600 a month in food costs to provide the more than 2,500 a day calorie intake our son needs, and the additional therapies he requires to keep his body strong that we pay out of pocket every month. Just two cents from a mom of a CFer.
