Re: “The return of Tom Petty to Verizon

Hello of a show. And he sold out both times. All local music-lovers should regularly thank our lucky stars that Michael Marion runs Verizon Arena. He used to be an agent before he began managing facilities (Tupelo before here). He has great connections and knows what makes bands and their management happy. We got Paul McCartney on a Saturday night. That's pretty incredible. And then there's Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, the Who, etc., all of which make an old white guy like me very happy.

Re: “Hawgball prospects

God, I appreciate actual analysis of the Razorbacks' situation. Totally lacking in the daily paper.

Re: “Hail to Forty Two

They definitely have local beers. Don't know about Rock Town. Don't remember seeing anything from Arkansas on the wine list, which didn't hurt my feelings in the least.

Re: “Hail to Forty Two

Next try the soup. We've never had a bad one, and a fairly large container of it is only $5.

Re: “Sports bar success

Maybe they're owned by a Chik-Fil-A devotee. Or Hobby Lobby. But I just called and nobody answered. No watching the Hogs this afternoon at J.J.'s, I guess.

Re: “Feeling the power of Green Day at Verizon

Great review! I too was there, and I couldn't believe how Billie Joe had every single person in the arena eating out of his hand the entire show. He willed everyone to get involved and to have a great time. It was showmanship at its very best. And it was joyous!

Re: “Grocery store wine bill passes House Rules committee

I am a partner in a liquor store that is only a few hundred yards from a Walmart. Wine occupies about half the square footage of our sales floor. And it's our highest-profit item by far. Liquor is second, and beer -- which retail groceries and C-stores also sell -- is a distant third. And that's all we've got. A few chips, cigarettes, soft drinks. But wine drives our business. And we still only have about a 5 percent net profit margin. You let Walmart and other retailers sell all brands of wine as one of about 1,000 categories on the shelves of their hundreds-of-thousands-of-square-feet sales floor (ours is about 4,000 square feet, and we're bigger than most), and we will die. They don't have to make a decent margin on wine. We HAVE to just to barely make a profit on the year. I know it's hard for legislators to say no to Walmart, but in this case lots of small business' future is at risk. Please defeat this bill.
