Re: “Who'll check the historians?

Who checks up on historians? First, we do ourselves. A sentence we once wrote that started, "Thus it came as a great surprise...." turned into, "Thus it came as no surprise...." Second, we practicing historians do point out errors or other interpretations to each other. As for books, much of the responsibility lies with the publishers who fail to get intelligent readers, skimp on hiring fact-checkers and often fail to get thorough grammar and spelling checks made. Finally, it ought to be noted that in this great age of mental relativity both truth and error are equal and require equal time in the name of Balance. Some call this Fox, and that makes one yearn for the Old Days of the Arkansas Gazette which once sported a motto supposedly borrowed from Jefferson that addressed, incorrectly as it turned out, this very issue.
