Everything looks different when someone else's ox is in the ditch, doesn't it?

Hey. As a proud pug owner, a pug NEEDS a tux. Or a prom dress, depending upon sex.

Re: “Chinese textile plant coming to Forrest City will consume all cotton farmed in state, news report says

Several points here.

1. The plant will use 95 percent of the amount of cotton Arkansas produced LAST YEAR, which is about 50 percent of what it was producing 15 years ago.

2. The land and the buildings have been purchased by Ruyi from a private owner (A Canadian real estate investment firm that had owned it for four or five years).

3. Average pay for the jobs to be created is $15 an hour.

4. Another significant factor in locating the plant in America vs. China is the much lower cost and higher dependability of electricity in America.

Re: “Cataloguing Confederate monuments, including latter day tributes

I've driven past that Forrest statue in Nashville many times. It should be taken down and melted on the grounds of execrable taste alone. And the sculptor should be shot.

Re: “Confederate monuments: So far they seem safe in Arkansas

FWIW, the commissary noted above was to provide food for workers on the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad, of which a company owned in part by Forrest had taken over the rebuilding after the Civil War. (Pre-war, the construction had gotten as far as Madison before it stopped; the rails were pulled up and used to armor the CSS Arkansas.)

Forrest came in for considerable criticism when he hired former slaves through the Freedmen's Bureau and paid them the same wage as what was paid to white workers. Many white workers walked off the job in protest.

Not to detract from Forrest's infamous past as a slave trader, but just to note that he wasn't a one-dimensional character.
