Re: “Ted Cruz announces Arkansas leadership team

I guess I never realized the number of nuts and crazies in Arkansas even though I have been a registered Republican since 1952, with substantial Republican credentials, and thought I knew all of them. The clown car should be touring Arkansas soon and will increase to the clown train with an unending train of cabooses without an engine other than Cruz as engineer and TRUMP propelling the train from the rump. My God, this nightmare will never end.

Re: “Rockefeller the reformer

My fondest memories in politics come from the Rockefeller Era of Excellence. Winthrop Rockefeller was without exception the greatest thing to happen to Arkansas, generally, and the Republican Party specifically in my political experience. As one of the few Republicans in Benton County in the 1950s then Chairman of the Benton County Republican Committee in the 1960s, I worked in the campaigns for Governor in 64 and when he won in 66, serving in the Administration first as Legal Aide/Advisor on Prison Affairs then as Commissioner of Revenue. While serving as Advisor on Prison Affairs during his first term, we would spend at least 6 hours, twice monthly, reviewing clemency petitions. The Governor seldom left the office before 9 or 10, then met at the penthouse across the street on the top floor of the National Old Line, ate supper, and started file reviews while sipping a Vodka and Tonic. We never finished before daybreak and usually worked til 8 or 9. WR was the most honest, compassionate and empathetic person I have ever met. But the most important characteristic and most unique in politics, was the absence of hatred.

Re: “'The Unnatural State'

As a native Arkansawyer, I have witnessed the best and the worst day in our short history. The worst day, Central High School in Little Rock in order for Orval Faubus to avoid the traditional third term prohibition, and the best, the election of the Honorable Winthrop Rockefeller as Governor. The worst and the best days were separated by only a decade. Living in Northwest Arkansas, we were graciously spared a lot of the scurrilous and vicious Jim Johnson lies included in this article. During that era, Northwest Arkansas was treated like a bastard child so far as the state media was concerned. Tulsa, Springfield and even Kansas dominated our news sources. Having served as Governor Rockefeller’s Legal Aide/Advisor on Prison Affairs, I witnessed his compassion first hand for those less fortunate which has never, and will never, be duplicated in Arkansas politics. Thankfully, his influence continues through the Win Rockefeller Trust.
